Part Gold

Part Gold

I wrote this song in Exmouth, north of Perth in WA. I was working on Ken Young’s album up there and a cyclone came through — it’s a very cyclone-prone area. It didn’t hit Exmouth itself but it killed 3 people further up the coast where it did hit. I’d never seen such colours. The Earth was red, the sea gold and black — we lost all electricity and contact, stopped working, nailed planks of wood across windows, planes stopped flying and all anyone spoke about was the weather. And it’s true, that was all that was on my mind too. Just waiting for the storm to hit, and being prepared to sit tight while the waters were high. Amazing.

A little further down the path
A little past the crooked gate
There lies the open sea
Part gold and part shade
And we’ve bordered up our windows
We’ve sheltered ourselves in

But it will rain down on me
It’ll rain down on me

Cos I’m opening my door
I’ve stepped out into the wind
In nothing but my hair
And this is bare skin
I’m wild as a storm
Burning like a star

Now let it rain down on me
Let it rain down on me

I’m in this country town
Like a tea cup in a storm
There’s nothing left to think about
And no one left to warn
We’ll drink tea and talk about the weather

I think I’ll let it rain down on me
Let it rain down on me

I don’t know much
But I know this much is true
If you want to feel the warm
There’s a storm to live through
Find out where you will go
Then turn to face the sky
And let it rain down

Let it rain down

A little further down the path
A little past the crooked gate
There lies the open sea
Part gold and part shade
And I’m wild as the sea
Burning like a star
So let it rain
